Sheosar Lake (Deosai Plains)

The Sheosar Lake is located in the Pakistan one of the best location Deosi National Park, in Gilgit Baltistan province of northern Pakistan. Sheosar Lake is at an elevation of four thousand one hundred and forty two meters (4,142 meters) which means that, thirty thousand five hundred and eighty nine feet (13,589 ft) in Karakoram West Tibetan Plateau Alpine Steppe. 

After all of that, the approximate length of Sheosar Lake is 2.3 Kilometers, width is 1.8 Kilometers, and average depth is 40 meters (130 ft). Sheosar Lake has a unique name but also has unique meaning of that Lake; Sheosar Lake name means Blind Lake. The Lake reflect different patterns, view in different seasons like summer, spring. Sometimes Sheosar Lake covered with ice or covered with full of greenery which reflect the positive impact and refreshing for tourists.

Deosai National Park is located above the tree line and at an average height of 13,500 feet above sea level, the Deosai Plains are among the highest plateaus in the world. The Deosai Plains cover an area of almost 3,000 square kilometers. For just over half the year - between November and May - Deosai is snow-bound. In the summer months when the snow clears up, Deosai is accessible from Skardu in the north and the Astore Valley in the west. Deosai is well known for its spring season when it is covered by a carpet of millions of flowers and a wide variety of butterflies.

Sheosar Lake is one of highest lakes in the world; due to the height of Lake it gains attention from all over the world. Sheosar Lake is falls in Deosai Plateau and this is world second highest after Chang Tang. Chilam valley lies nearby. The plateau is positioned at the border of Karakorum and the western Himalaya.



The tourists visiting the Deosai Plains can also look for the Himalayan Ibex, Red Fox, Golden Marmot, Gray Wolf, the Ladakh Urial, the Snow Leopard, and over 124 resident and migratory birds. Birds in the park include the Golden Eagle, Lammergeyer, Griffon Vulture, Laggar Falcon, Peregrine Falcon, Kestrel, Sparrow hawk and Snow cock.

The lake is accessible through two routes. One is via Skardu and the other via Astore District. The road through Skardu can be covered by jeep in few hours and if treked it can take 2 days time. From the Astore through chilum comes this lake before going to the Deosai. The mighty Himalaya moutains are visible all around the area with majestic heights and endless beauty. The rare species of Brown Bear is present in the area. The lake is one of the main attractions of the Deosai Plains. Its beautiful waters and natural surroundings make the visit unforgettable.

This area remained uncrossable for ages due to abundance of variety of wildlife here. Icy winds, thunderstorms, and presence of wildlife make it impossible to dwell here even in this age, that’s why Deosai is mostly uninhabited.

Nomads from Kashmir pass through the Deosai plains with their herds, it is their path of choice since centuries. Deosai has a deafening silence, a silence spanning over centuries. The silence is so deep that one can hear his own heartbeat, unless a marmot’s whistle fills the valley. Deosai is located on the boundary of Karakoram and the western Himalayas, and at no point it is less than 4000 meters above sea level. It remains covered with snow for 8 months. The rest of the year, it hosts a range of beautiful flowers of all hues and colours, but not a single tree is found in this plateau spread over 3000 sq. km.
